A 2-year-old with Jet Lag
Wednesday, January 7, 2009
Fun times. Finally, a little bit of normalcy has returned with an internet connection. Really, what did we do before we could vacation at the world wide web? We have been here in Switzerland a few days. A few slightly painful days. No furniture, no internet, no Texas sunshine. We haven't seen the sun since we've gotten here. It's been very chilly (below freezing each day).
I've been driving like a European already. I have my little VW Golf hatchback. I told Dave this isn't going to be permanent :) Thank you, dad, for teaching me to drive a stick shift. I'll forever be grateful to that little green VW bug teaching me how to back up a hill using the hand brake.
I guess the hardest part right now is sleeping. Pretty much every night we push ourselves until 9 or 10pm, but like clockwork we wake up around midnight not to fall asleep again until 5am. Maya included. Any suggestions? I'm just trying to get us on a normal schedule right now.
Dave has started work. He works next door to the United Nations and can hear the protestors yelling outside expressing their distaste for Israel.
We've had to take out a small loan here to afford groceries. I can hardly bring myself to buy stuff. A girl at work told me I can get groceries cheaper in France, but I haven't ventured the Golf that far yet. Sharla, up for an across-the-border adventure when you get here?
Sad news is that our air shipment has been delayed. It will be at least another week without our stuff. How do you cook a hot dog with one pot? Hmmm.
Enough of the negative aspects though. Next post will be pictures of our house and hopefully some sunshine!

Thanks for the post. I've been thinking and wondering about you. Give yourself time to adjust, in the meantime, stay connected to us!! We want to hear everything, no matter how trivial or how grumpy!
What an adventure...
Jet lag is brutal. Just be fanatical about sticking to the new time schedule, no naps late in the day, and get outside as much as possible (the natural light is supposed to help reset your bodies internal clock). That's what we do anyway - good luck with it all!
France here we come! And I am with Shel - keep us posted - good and bad. We love you all and love to hear from you. How can we call you?
Hang in there - it will get better!! And seriously, I will bring whatever you need (groceries included!)
You guys are amazing. We're watching for your posts and updates to hear all the fun stories. Hang in there!! Your own couch (and pots) will make a huge difference! We love you!
Glad you guys made it! Eat some good chocolate and it will make it all better...or is that expensive there, too? :)
Thank you for the Play Station. We had a good time with the Blacks and Rock Band on Christmas Day. You should check out our pics. Thanks to you - we had a Rockin' Christmas with some sweet friends.
I am sure you will be just fine girl. You guys are awesome!

Ditto on what the others said...PLEASE keep us updated! We have been thinking about you constantly and wondering how you are doing. In fact Jared has asked me several times "should I be worried about my little sister?" :) So keep the updates comin'.
Sounds like things aren't great yet, but hopefully you will adjust soon. Let us know if we can send anything to you with Shar. Hang in there!!!
Hey Shirlee! It's Sue from Tax Administration. Thanks for the Christmas letter and the link to your blog. What an adventure you're having! I look forward to the pictures and stories. Everyone says "hi."
We spent a summer in England when the kids were 5,3 and almost 1 and the jet lagg goes away pretty quickly. Switzerland sounds wonderful. Moving is always difficult but it sounds like you guys are in a great location. How long are you guys going to be there?
Thanks for the update. We've been checking regularly to see if you made it there yet. I hope all the jet lag and inconveniences will be nothing but memories soon as you get your things and get settled in. Good luck!
I can't believe you are there! It must be a total adjustment, you are such a trooper!
(I have great memories of your green vw bug!)
