Skating at Olympic Oval

video

Ethen was a champ skating at the SLC Olympic Oval rink.  Bob called him a fugitive nursing home resident.  He was so fast!  I think he loved the speed.

Maya did so well too!  She could skate around the entire oval by herself by the end of the night.  It was her first time on skates too, and she took a few pointers from Lance and then was off!

Fun times.

Daily December 1-5

Once again I've decided to document each day of December in a small mini album. It's fun to look back at them over the years.

Quote of the Day - Holiday Edition

When walking into Dillard's, Ethen was mesmerized by the pretty decorations and things.  While passing the Ladies' special occasion dresses, he said, "Oooh, pretty.  I'm gonna buy one for my other mom."

-----------------------------------------

While listening to the 12 Days of Christmas on the cd in the car Maya informed me that she knew what this song was about.

"Really?"  I responded, "and what is that?"

"It's about a dad.  And he was giving his looovely wife some gifts.  But these are all bad gifts...except the five golden rings...those are the best gift.  That's why they sing that part higher."

I'd have to say I agree, sweetheart.  This lovely wife doesn't want any geese a layin' anything this year --especially a goose egg.

-----------------------------------------

I love hearing the kids singing Christmas songs.   Each night I try to sing them a different one, and we are also listening to a cd when we drive in the car.  My favorite lyrics from Maya this year are:

"Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la la la la la la la.
'Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la la la la la.
Join me on my way to peril, FA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!"

Sweet Maya's musings...

I try to document life.  Some things are too precious to not share.

Translation (in case you don't read First Grader):  My friend Lauren came over to my house.  Her mom brought pumpkin pie with frosting on it.  We played for a little while.  I showed them our toys.  We have girl's toys and boy's toys.  When they left I sneaked over to the counter.  I licked it.  It was so good.  I licked it more.

Her art has really been impressing me lately.  I love the attention to detail in this picture -- the frames on the wall.  She even captured what I was wearing that day (she didn't make this picture on the same day, she remembered those details).

Translation:  Yesterday it was my mom's birthday.  It was fun!  I got my mom a volcano.  She liked it.

I love this!  Her goggles crack me up.

Translation:  Last night we got our volcano to go kaboom!  with baking soda and vinegar.  It was fun!  We got it to erupt three times.  It was so awesome.  I was wearing my goggles.  It was exploding everywhere!  I was so surprised.  It was my second time making it go kaboom.

She brings home books she's made quite frequently.  This one touched my heart.  When we thought we were going to move to Dubai we explained the whole Israeli-Palestinian conflict to her.  Poor girl.  She knows more about the world now than I did when I graduated high school!

Translation: TITLE: Where I'm going for Christmas break?
Where am I going for Christmas break?  Am I going to New York?  No.
Am I going to Dubai?  No.
Am I going to Utah?  Yes.

I am loving this age.  Maya, you are such a sweet girl.

Pilgrim Dissertation

Maya learned A LOT about pilgrims in school and came home with a book filled with interesting tidbits. If you've got the time (10min worth) she'll fill ya in. Pretty cute.

More Quotes

I knew I had more quotes written down, but couldn't find them.  Maya stole off with my notebook and I've just recovered it.  Here are a few more goodies:

Ethen:  Lemonade is my favorite fruit.

----------------------

Maya:  Let's pretend we're Halloween caroling, "Trick or treat, smell my feet..."

----------------------

Ethen:  How do you say "Ewww" in Spanish?

----------------------

Ethen:  Mom, what are ears stuck with?
Me:  I dunno.   Skin?
Ethen:  Can you take mine off?  I don't want them anymore.

----------------------

*cough*
*cough*
Ethen:  Mom!  I drankt coffee (cough-fee) and it made me cough!

Quote of the Day

I had fun getting out the tape and scissors for these pages. It helps when you have gorgeous photos to work with. Thanks, Linsey!

Here are a few captured conversations from the kiddos:

While riding in the car, Dave was keeping the kids in suspense by not telling them what he was going to buy at Home Depot.

Ethen:  Is it green?

Maya: Does it have a head?
Maya: Is it a maggot?

{huh?}

Me: You mean a magnet?

Maya: No, a maggot.

{Still sure I heard incorrectly.}

Me:  Eww.  Do you know what that is?

Maya: Yes.  It's a tiny white worm that doesn't have any eyes.

{stunned silence and then the punchline that had me laughing}

Maya: I bet you know that I didn't even learn that in school.

----------------------

Ethen is my little shopper.  He loves Target, Home Depot, and likes to run errands with us.

Ethen:  I know a store that we haven't been to before.

{Really?  I was under the impression we'd been to them all.  Am I missing one?}

Ethen:  Taco Ranch Lego Man Stop Drop Roll

Me:  You're right.  We have never been to that store.

Ethen:  It has lots of toys.

iDSD

Did you know it's International Digital Scrapbooking Day? Didn't think so. I actually had some time to create a page in honor.

I've been really slow and feeling a little creative-less these days. My to-do list is piling up. A few things haven't helped spark some movement on my part.

First, Ethen broke my camera. Knocked it off the counter when he was taking pictures of the pumpkin. Ugh. I don't want my next camera to be the same -- I'm looking for the more expensive professional type this time. But that isn't in the budget right now. So I'm having to rely on my iPhone, which isn't the greatest. It's good for instagram, but not so much for what I want. *Sigh* Christmas is coming.

Secondly, I found out that they are disbanding the Creative Team that I am on at Jessica Sprague. She's moving in a different direction with her site. I am saddened by this news, which becomes effective January 1. No more free stash of stuff, but I am also ready to be a little liberated from it as well. So not all bad.

Family Pictures

Not too many bad weather days during Fall in Texas.  We've experienced some crisp mornings even in the 50s.  We've lit the fireplace and cuddled by it, and knew we'd only need to wait a few more days for 80 degrees to be the norm.  We've caught a fleeting fall, and Ethen thinks that winter is over now.

One way to guarantee a little bit of bad weather?  Schedule a family photo shoot.  Truly my friend, Linsey, made miracles out of chaos.  The day was dark, windy, and oh so chilly.  And I didn't factor that into our clothing choices so we quickly added sweaters and leggings.

We constantly picked our hair out of our faces, chased Ethen around, scolded Maya, and the repeated.  I think the chill in the air made the kids even more fidgety, in an effort to keep warm.

But, a true professional, Linsey captured some good ones.  More glimpses to come...

The Lone Ranger

Dave and I haven't been to a Halloween party in awhile.  He usually works late on that night and throws something together last minute.  I had a Lord of the Rings outfit ordered and on its way.   After pestering him again to choose an outfit, he said he was going to be the Lone Ranger.  Weird choice, I thought.  Then he said, "Have you seen they are re-making a movie of it?"  Nope, hadn't heard that.

View the trailer here.

When I got my Lord of the Rings costume, and it didn't fit well, I decided to join my husband and become another dynamic duo.

We were a little ahead of the times.  No one recognized our costumes.   Johnnny Depp as Tonto, people.

I guess they will come next July.

Glitter Slime Monsters

I saw this idea to make glitter slime and totally loved it.  Maya had a half day of school today, so we dug out our glitter glue and gave it a whirl.  The kids squished and molded it for awhile.

Then I dug out some craft supplies and some glass jars and the kids made little monsters out of it.

Maya's turned out to be witch-like.  Ethen's more like Frankenstein.  He loved sticking the eyes on and went a little crazy.

Handmade Halloween decor

I've been getting my Halloween craft groove on. I am so happy to have craft supplies at my fingertips! No longer do I have to "wish" I had a styrofoam ball. I got all these ideas/supplies from Michaels. They have some fun stuff right now. I made this banner from digital scrapbook paper I printed on my computer at home. Then added glitter medallions, lights, glitter ribbon, and striped ribbons, and voila! Not too cutesy, not too creepy, kinda inbetween fun.

I got the candleholder and flower bunches from Michaels too. Just clipped them off and stuffed them in. You can make this in 15 minutes, easy.

I was looking for a spooky flower arrangement.  I'm no floral designer, obviously, but it turned out okay.  I was going for the spindly, creepy look.

Here's a look at the table.  The damask pumpkins are from Hobby Lobby.

Keddington Reunion

For the Keddington Reunion, we had a theme of "Olympic Games."   Sarah and Lance did an excellent job putting together meaningful and fun activities for us.  For a detailed and beautifully written narration and gorgeous pictures, visit Catherine's blog here.
