So I've been wanting to learn how to use my camera. I purchased an e-book called "Get Me Off Auto." I have a long way to go, but I was particularly pleased with these shots. I really only got these shots by luck, and need a lot more tutoring. But I am convinced that lighting is crucial to a good shot.

Those are truly excellent photos! sounds like a cool book. I'm impressed especially by the husband shot, as soon as I get the camera out for mine, he turns into a dork! I thought you had a digital SLR? and yep, it's all about light!
